A New Chapter for our Community and Country

I've been asked about my reaction to the announcement this morning from Justine Trudeau that he is stepping down from the position as Prime Minister. Here are my thoughts:

Today marks a significant moment in Canadian history—the end of a decade defined by reckless policy decisions made in Ottawa, many in partnership with authorities in Victoria. As a Penticton City Councillor, I have experienced firsthand the damaging consequences to our region because of these failed policies. These failures include rocketing housing costs, the proliferation of tent cities, a healthcare system that is increasingly abandoning the sick and mentally ill, the widespread availability of free and legalized drugs in public spaces, and, most alarmingly, a justice system that continues to release violent offenders back into our communities. These are the direct results of misguided decisions, and they demand our urgent attention and collective action.

For too long, those policy choices have ignored the concerns of everyday citizens, particularly the unique needs of smaller municipalities like ours. It is deeply troubling that, in the face of such pressing issues, the Liberal Party’s focus remains on a leadership race rather than on addressing the challenges that are crippling our cities and our country.

That said, there is a glimmer of hope. We now have a real opportunity to chart a new course for Canada—one that prioritizes meaningful change, values the voices of all Canadians, and focuses on addressing the urgent problems that affect our communities and our future.
